Tyler J. Thorp, Ph.D.

Tyler’s practice focuses on patent matters pertaining to electrical, mechanical, and software technologies, including developing global patent portfolios and evaluating patent portfolios in support of litigation and licensing activities. He has a passion for deeply understanding his client’s technology and partnering with them to develop strong and enforceable patent portfolios that support their business objectives.

Tyler has a decade of prior engineering experience in hardware and software development. He is a named inventor on over 65 U.S. patents and was previously an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Washington.

Tyler has extensive experience handling patent matters for clients ranging from startups to large global corporations. He has advised clients regarding patent filing strategy and portfolio management, acted as in-house patent counsel for startup and early stage companies, and drafted and prosecuted U.S. and international patent applications covering innovations in computer software, cloud-based services, augmented reality, semiconductor devices and fabrication, medical devices, and consumer electronics.

Before joining Seed IP, Tyler was a partner at a boutique IP law firm in San Francisco and an in-house patent agent at SanDisk. Before practicing law, Tyler developed software for automating the design of integrated circuits and designed digital and analog circuits at SanDisk, Matrix Semiconductor (acquired by SanDisk), and Sun Microsystems. At Matrix, he helped pioneer the design and development of three-dimensional non-volatile semiconductor memories. At Sun, he developed software to synthesize dynamic circuits from a high-level hardware description into a physical layout and worked as a design engineer on the UltraSPARC III and V microprocessors.

Tyler is admitted to the state bars of Washington and California, and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
